MUDCAT FLAGGING JUGS

Hello, My name is James Oliver, to many Catfishermen and Jugliners inTexas, I am known as Mudcat.One of my passions is catfishing, more specificly, jugline fishing. For years Jug fishing has been done with bleach bottles and antifreeze bottles. This method was alot of work and not very productive. Several years back I started making a jugline that, what is reffered to these days as a flagging jug It stands straight up when a catfish is caught.
These flagging juglines have influenced many fisherman across Texas and are used by many fishing guides.
Almost at any given time as you visit Texas lakes, On Lake Conroe and Lake Houston,; you may see some of these flagging Jugs. They are extremely popular. The entire family can get involved and the kids love them
How to use them
First thing, you will need about 8 to 16 os's of weight tied to the line. The line can be any length you want to put on. I normally put on 35 to 40 ft. I usually lay the anchor on the side of the boat, then bait the hooks, or you can just put the anchor in the water and bait as the line goes down , when you get the hooks baited let out the line untill the anchor hits bottom leave about 2 ft. slack and tie a half hitch on the end of the jug,on the bottom. If you have not put your name and address on the jug now is a good time , wright it on the stem near the foam, put the date on the cap. lay the jug in the water on the top it will lay down in perfect position.
The next thing is the bait what bait do you use? I use cut shad, I prefer cut shad because it smells a little better, when the catfish rubs against it to find out what it is. Beef heart is the old stand by, Trob told me this, and it works, there are many people useing the Beef heart but they found out how it workes because he told them.
Use only whole beef heart and use the blood that is in the package to pour over it. cut the beef heart in small pieces, i cut then about 1/2 inch square. It is in my opinion that it catches fish but a little slower than shad. I usually take one in the ice chest with me when I go just in case i don't find the shad.
Watch the fish finder and put the jugs where the fish are, you have to find them and usually they are there for a while. The fish move with the weather and the currant, depending on the rainfall and the cold weather. When the weather starts to turn cold the big cats start to gourge themselves for the winter and get big and fat.
